Dr. Buchalter specializes in sports medicine and minimally-invasive surgery for the shoulder, knee and hip. He is one of the region's few orthopaedic surgeons to perform hip arthroscopy for the treatment of labral tears and impingement. Dr. Buchalter performed a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the Southern California Orthopaedic Institute and his orthopaedic residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine and his bachelor's of arts degree with honors from Duke University.
Dr. Buchalter has received numerous awards for his academic achievements, including the prestigious University of Tennessee College of Medicine Cannon Scholarship, presented to the graduating medical student exhibiting the greatest combination of scholarship and compassion, empathy and caring for patients. He also received the college's Student Service Award for his leadership as president of the Medical Student Executive Council. In 2002, he was awarded a scholarship from the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation to advance his knowledge of minimally invasive joint replacement.
Dr. Buchalter’s professional interests include arthroscopic repair of large to massive rotator cuff tears, arthroscopic shoulder stabilization, knee ligament reconstruction and meniscal repair, and joint replacement. He has presented his research at the 2004 and 2005 meetings of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association. In 2005, his research on an advanced technique for the arthroscopic repair of rotator cuff tears was published in the Arthroscopy Association of North America's Technical Pearls.
A strong supporter of local communities, Dr. Buchalter has served as a team physician for collegiate and high school sports teams since 1999. While in Southern California, he provided physician coverage for the College of the Canyons football team during its march to the 2004 National Junior College Championship. Since joining OrthoMaryland, Dr. Buchalter has continued his work with local athletic teams.
Dr. Buchalter resides in Baltimore with his wife and son. Outside of the operating room, he enjoys tennis, basketball, golf, running and skiing. Recently, he has developed an interest in wheel-spun pottery-a hobby that, like his profession, requires both patience and precision.
