Center for Complementary Care,
An OrthoMaryland Center of Excellence

For orthopaedic patients, research has shown that certain kinds of complementary health care, when used in combination with standard medical treatments, can improve wellness and quality of life.

Our Center for Complementary Care is exclusively devoted to procedures and therapies that complement mainstream medical techniques. Working closely with a patient’s OrthoMaryland physician, the Center’s skilled practitioners target the whole person—mind, body and spirit—to improve wellness, manage pain and restore balance.

We offer the following physician-directed therapies:
• Nutritional Counseling
Proper nutrition gives bones, muscles and joints the strength and nourishment they need to properly support the body. Eating a healthy, well-balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals not only helps prevent injury and manage pain, but also accelerates healing.

• Acupuncture
Safe and natural, acupuncture promotes good health and pain-free living by restoring the circulation of vital energy, or “Qi,” throughout the body. Physical trauma, sprains, strains, repetitive injury, overexertion, surgery and stress can all block or disrupt the flow of Qi, causing pain, swelling, stiffness, fatigue and decreased athletic performance. Using tiny, hair-thin needles, acupuncturists penetrate specific points on the body to balance the movement of Qi and nourish all areas of the body, especially the bones, joints, muscles and tendons.

• Massage Therapy
One of the oldest healing arts, massage therapy enhances tissue function and promotes physical and mental relaxation. Using their hands and fingers, certified massage therapists rub the soft tissues of the body, such as the muscles, varying the pressure and movement as they target specific areas of concern.

• Zero Balancing
A hands-on, bone-based therapy, zero balancing aligns the body’s energy with its physical structure. Simple yet powerful, it focuses on the whole person, even when prescribed for specific needs.

Using touch, zero balancing practitioners evaluate a patient’s energy fields and flow, searching for areas of energy blockage and disturbance. Once structure and energy are balanced, patients can enjoy better health and a stronger sense of well being.
